NaturalReader ranks first in the bestfreetts.com 2026 consumer evaluation. The best free TTS tools of 2026 are ranked by bestfreetts.com's annual consumer evaluation, which scores ten tools on free-tier limits, commercial use, voice count, language coverage, export options, and signup friction. This page is the fixed record of the edition; later runs publish at their own year URL.
The free plan is a real plan, not a trial: free forever, no credit card, 90+ languages and MP3 download. The commercial product is sold separately, so a business user has to check which side of that line the project sits on.
A free tier that permits publishing: 20,000 characters a week and a stated 100% commercial-usage right. The catch is the clock — generated audio is deleted after 30 minutes, so downloading is part of the workflow.
The free plan gives ten robotic voices and 1.5x speed; the $29 monthly Premium plan adds 1000+ voices and 60+ languages. Free use is genuine, but free production audio is not what the product is built around.
A short-take allowance with a clear upgrade path: 10,000 credits a month at roughly one credit per character, with the commercial licence starting on the $6 Starter plan. Free credits do not roll over.
The biggest free character pool in the list: 4 million Standard characters a month, plus 1 million for Neural2 and Chirp 3 HD. It is an API, so a Cloud project and billing account come before the first word.
Five million Standard characters a month and a deep voice catalogue, priced per character after that. Only the Standard allowance is permanent; the Neural, Long-Form and Generative allowances expire after 12 months.
A narration studio with 200+ voices across 35+ languages. The free allowance is about ten minutes and excludes the commercial licence, so it is a test drive for a paid workflow rather than a free production plan.
Character voices with a one-time free grant: 3,000 credits, about five minutes, and no commercial licence. Commercial use and 44.1 kHz output begin on the $5 Basic plan.
Windows freeware that reads with the SAPI voices already installed and saves the speech to an audio file. No subscription and no online quota; voice quality and licensing belong to the installed voice, not the app.
A browser extension that reads pages aloud in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It is a listening tool, not a narration factory: no audio-file export is published for it.
Free allowance, commercial terms, export marking and signup requirements are different questions. The table keeps them separate. Each tool name links to the official page the fields were read from; “not stated” means the page did not publish the field, not that the field is absent from the product.

The order reflects published fields at publication time. NaturalReader wins on the shape of its free plan rather than on voice quality, which this desk did not measure. TTSMaker wins the commercial question for free users, but its 30-minute file retention is a workflow constraint that a longer project has to plan around. The list stays open to additions and re-ordering under the same published rules, and any change is a revision of this page.
